Arthroplasty (Plastic) of ligaments and tendons

Damage to the ligaments and tendons is the most common injury to the musculoskeletal system. Depending on the mechanism of damage and those anatomical and functional disorders that occur, there are closed and open lesions.

By closed include:

  • slaughterhouses
  • compression
  • stretching and tearing of soft tissues

Open include:

  • Wounds of the skin and subcutaneous structures.

Tendon rupture often occurs at the site of its fixation to the bone, sometimes with a small bone fragment, degenerative changes of the tendons due to the loss of tissue of its properties or in the place of direct injury.

 The most common breaks are:

  • Fifth (Achilles) tendon
  • the long head of the biceps muscle of the shoulder
  • extensor tendons and finger flexors
  • medial and lateral ligament of the knee
  • anterior and posterior cruciate ligament of the knee

To clarify the diagnosis is recommended that MRI or ultrasound testing.

The main symptoms of ligament and tendon damage:

  • Pain
  • Weakening of muscle strength
  • Severe disruption of the injured segment function
  • Swelling
  • Restriction of movements
  • Hemarthrosis
  • At the time of trauma, the patient may experience acute pain as if something had “crunched” and shifted.

Given the nature of the injury, the location and the results of additional examination methods, treatment of such injuries may be conservative or operative.

For plastic reconstruction of the relationship is more often used:

  • various artificial materials that do not adversely affect the surrounding tissues
  • the body's own tissues as a result of transplantation from intact areas of the body
  • Minimally invasive arthroscopic technique of performing anterior cruciate ligament plastic is also possible.

In the postoperative period, immobilization of the damaged segment and unloading of the limb is required. The recovery period can be from 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the technology of the operation and the choice of transplant fixation.

During rehabilitation, the patient uses a functional orthosis, performs exercise therapy, receives physiotherapy treatment.
