Arthrodesis of the joint is a type of surgery, the main purpose of which is to create ankylosis of the joint, its immobility. It is most often used for ankle, subtalar, interphalangeal and knee joints.
Indications for arthrodesis of the joint:
- ineffectiveness of therapeutic treatment
- impossibility of endoprosthesis
- deforming arthrosis in the last stage
- tuberculous arthritis
- improper bone fusion after fractures
- constant joint pain
- violation of the supporting function of the joint
- unstable paralytic foot
For additional examination, you can perform:
- X-ray of the joint
- CT of the joint
Depending on the localization of the pathological process, there are the following types of arthrodesis:
- Extra-articular - operations of this type are performed without damage to the joint surfaces in the case of joint tuberculosis and involves fixation of the joint with a bone graft, which is fused and gradually transformed into bone tissue.
- Intra-articular - involves the mechanical removal of damaged joint surfaces and move to a physiologically correct position of the joint, which is fixed by a metal structure or screws.
- Compression is a combined method that includes the use of intra-articular and extra-articular methods of fixation using an external fixation device.
In the postoperative period it is necessary to strictly follow the doctor's recommendations. Depending on the severity and location of the problem, the rehabilitation period can last from 2 months to one year from the time of surgery. The operated joint should be fixed in a plaster bandage and any load on the limb should be avoided. Accelerate recovery (or optimize the rehabilitation period) with physiotherapy, laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, magnetic therapy and massage, which are recommended after removal of the immobilization bandage.
